BA courses see highest enrolment; engineering, tech has maximum PhD students: AISHE report

The central government’s All India Survey for Higher Education (AISHE) 2020-2021 report said that Bachelor of Arts (BA) courses saw the highest enrollment at 1.04 crore students, followed by 49.12 lakh students in Bachelor of Science (BSc) courses, the survey further noted. The Ministry of Education has shown that out of 1.04 crore students in BA courses, 52.7 percent are girls and 47.3 percent are boys.

The report said, “Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) enrolled 49.12 lakh students (52.2 per cent of them girls). 43.22 lakh students are enrolled in BIC (48.5 percent of them are girls). BTech has 23.20 lakh enrolled students, of which 28.7 percent are women Bachelor of Engineering (BE) enrolled 13.42 lakh students, of which 28.5 per cent are women.”

The largest number of students enrolled in the social science stream (9.41 lakh students), pursued science at the postgraduate level. Out of 9.41 lakh students, 56.5 percent are girls.

“The total number of PG students in social science courses is 9,41,648, of which 56.5 per cent are female students. The total enrollment in science stream is 6,79,178, of which 61.3 per cent are female. In the management stream, 6,86,001 students are enrolled in PG of which 43.1 per cent are girls,” The report said.

It added: “5.36 lakh students are enrolled in PG in commerce stream of which 66.5 per cent are female students. 3.20 lakh students are enrolled in PG in Indian language which is divided into 12 sub-streams. The number of students enrolled in the education stream is 2.06 lakh, of which the major contribution is 64.4 percent of females.

The largest number of students are enrolled in engineering and technology steam at the PhD level, followed by science.

The Ministry of Education has been conducting the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) since 2011, which covers all higher education institutions located in the country and providing higher education.
