Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) Plans to launch commercial 4G service and its 5G network in non-standalone (NSA) mode on 15th August, India’s Independence Day 2022. Rajkumar Upadhyay, Executive Director and Chairman of the Center for Development of Telematics (C-DoT), shared information during a recent industry event. He revealed that the state-owned telecom is simultaneously proving the concept (POC) for 4G while operating on 5G.
Private Indian telcos had already launched their 4G network a few years back, but BSNL was stuck in a financial challenge to bring it to market. BSNL’s 4G network is now complete and the company is expected to launch it as soon as the commercial agreement is signed. However, we can expect BSNL to establish its 5G SA connection by 3 by 2023.
BSNL has partnered with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), an IT services and consulting firm, to conduct field trials in Ambala and Chandigarh in northern India. State-run Telecommunication Consultants India Limited (TCIL) has partnered with C-DoT on other domestic products as well as the core network.
C-DoT, a state-owned research institute with premier academic institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technology, is playing a key role in developing the domestic telecom technology ecosystem. BSNL will use the same Indian 4G technology to launch its services in 2022.
In addition, the government is promoting the use of Indian startups in indigenous technologies and applications. To reduce its dependence on international vendors, India is trying to promote the growth of domestically grown technologies and products as part of its self-reliant India policy.
