Without proper medical care, the risk of complications for both mother and baby increases as the pregnancy progresses. Since the mother may not be aware that she is pregnant, she may fail to take proper care of herself. An unhealthy diet, strenuous activity, alcohol consumption, smoking and other lifestyle problems can lead to miscarriage or loss of pregnancy. Cryptic pregnancies also have a higher risk of premature birth, low birth rate, hospitalization, missing delivery or death.

If the new parents are not mentally prepared for the arrival of a new child in their life, this big change in their life can lead to child abuse or neglect, separation from the child, depression and other symptoms of emotional distress.
