Compressors are like hearts Refrigerator Just as this key element is responsible for the circulation of refrigerant inside the instrument, so the heart is responsible for the circulation of blood in the human body. Transforming an electronic signal into a compressor would be like adding a ‘brain’ to this ‘heart’. In addition, inverter technology has made household appliances, such as ACs and refrigerators, more energy efficient by significantly reducing energy consumption. However, these inverters are marketed separately by different brands and to test the validity of each technology, we will inspect the different types of inverter technology available for refrigerators here. This will help the users to differentiate between different technologies offered by different competitors. Let’s start with understanding the role of compressor in refrigerator.
What role does the compressor play in freezing?
The primary function of a compressor is to compress the refrigerant inside the refrigerator where the refrigerant gas turns into a hot liquid when compressed. The refrigerant then cools when it passes through a cooling condenser and finally conducts inside the refrigerator. The refrigerant receives heat from the refrigerator when it conducts and expands itself into a gas which eventually returns to the compressor which again compresses it with hot liquid and the cycle continues.
This means that the compressor acts like a pump designed for steam instead of water. It compresses the warm refrigerant gas into a hot liquid and then releases heat into the atmosphere by pushing it into the coils.
What is a standard compressor?
Previously, most refrigerators used a standard compressor that was activated when the temperature in the refrigerator exceeded a certain limit. However, these compressors deactivate themselves as the temperature drops below the limit and they wait for the next freezing cycle. Standard compressors are single-speed compressors that can be either ‘on’ or ‘off’ and operate at maximum power when activated. It cannot change speed depending on the rising temperature and constant change of states increases the wear and tear of the device while making a discerning sound each time the states are switched on.
What is inverter compressor?
As mentioned earlier, inverting an electronic signal to a compressor makes the refrigerator smarter. Inverters are added to the refrigerator compressor using a brushless direct current or BLDC motor. These motors allow the compressor to run with varying degrees of intensity or speed depending on the temperature and other environmental conditions. So the inverter compressor is a variable-speed compressor that uses a BLDC motor to operate at variable speeds.
Different types of inverter compressors are marketed by different brands
Digital inverter – A variable-speed compressor or electronic compressor compressor is marketed as a digital inverter when it is controlled by a microprocessor using algorithms (software). This technology is used by Samsung where digital inverter compressors are “on” most of the time, as opposed to standard compressors. However, the digital inverter compressor operates at different speeds depending on the situation and requirements. Samsung allows seven adjustable speeds in digital inverter technology used for its refrigerators.
Neutrifresh inverter – A Neutrifresh Electronic Inverter is also a digital electronic inverter marketed by Godrej. In addition to being controlled by a microprocessor, these digital inverters have special sensors that offer customized cooling depending on the type of food inside the refrigerator to keep them fresh for a long time.
Intelligence inverter – This technology is mostly used in whirlpool inverter refrigerators which are supported by three sensors for optimal control. For example, one sensor retrieves information about the internal temperature, the other estimates the amount of food loaded inside the refrigerator, and the latter realizes the type of use to provide precise motion control for the compressor.
Plasma inverter – In addition to IntelliSense inverter technology, Whirlpool has introduced another advanced technology in 2019. In addition to smart sensor-based control, plasma inverter technology has an extra layer of plasma coating on its compressor rod to help improve the longevity of the appliance. The company claims that a plasma intelligence inverter is designed to last 5 years longer than a simple digital inverter.
Smart inverter – LG uses this technology in single door refrigerators and markets it as a smart inverter technology. Like digital inverters, smart inverters also use microprocessors for optimal cooling control.
Inverter linear compressor – LG has come up with the idea of more inverter compressors that it uses in its premium fridge. The inverter linear compressor uses a linear arrangement of an electromagnet to compress the refrigerant. The electromagnet attracts the plate where the piston is stationary. A digital inverter compressor involves 4 friction points where a linear inverter compressor compressor uses the electromagnet setup and reduces it to a single point. It provides high energy efficiency and reduces energy dissipation. In addition to improved energy savings, linear inverter compressors keep food fresh for long periods of time in a wide range of environmental conditions.
