Floaters are spots in your eyes and usually look like black or gray glasses or a spider’s web that moves sideways when you move your eyes. Dark spots or lines (floaters) in your eyes are a symptom of retinal vein blockage.
The retina, a light-sensitive tissue behind your eyes, receives its blood supply through the retinal arteries and retinal veins. When a vein becomes blocked, it is called retinal vein occlusion. When the vein is blocked, blood and fluid spread to the retina. When this happens, the part of the retina called the macula becomes swollen. Swelling affects your central vision.
High cholesterol is common in people with retinal vein occlusion. A 2008 study found that high cholesterol was twice as common in people with impaired central retinal veins as in people without eye conditions. Other symptoms of retinal vein occlusion include changes in vision in one eye, blurred vision in one eye, and pain in the affected eye.
