New Delhi: Final year students returning to India after the conflict in Ukraine and due to the coronavirus pandemic will be allowed to take the Foreign Medical Graduate (FMG) examination. The National Medical Commission (NMC) said on Friday that this applies to foreign medical graduates who obtained their degrees on or before June 30, 2022.

After clearing the exam, students will have to undergo a mandatory rotating medical internship (CRMI) for two years instead of the usual one year, the NMC said, adding that foreign medical graduates will be eligible for registration only after completing the two-year CRMI.

It also said that the relaxation being given to foreign medical students is a “one-time measure” and will not be considered a “future priority”.

“Following the order passed by the Supreme Court on April 29, it has been informed that Indian students who were in the final year of their undergraduate medicine courses (had to leave their foreign medical institutes and return to India due to Covid-19, Russia-Ukraine war etc.) and subsequently their studies have completed and have also been issued a course completion certificate by their respective institutions, on or before June 30, 2022, will be allowed to appear in the FMG examination,” the NMC said in a notification seen by Mint.

“Then, after qualifying the FMG examination, such foreign medical graduates will have to undergo CRMI for two years for clinical training who could not physically participate during the undergraduate medicine course at the foreign institute. To acquaint them with the practice of medicine under Indian conditions,” the notice said.

On April 29, the Supreme Court asked the NMC to devise a scheme to enable MBBS students affected by the Ukraine conflict and pandemic to complete their clinical training in medical colleges in India as a one-time measure.
