Once a person clicks on the link, it enables fraudsters to access user’s phone information and easily steal confidential details, including bank account information, “Singh told the Times of India in a statement.
How? Kashmir WhatsApp forgery of files works
Fraudsters first send a link to victims on WhatsApp. The link is backed by a message claiming that users can download the movie ‘The Kashmir Files’ for free by clicking on the link. Once the user clicks on the link, a malware is injected into his smartphone. It is alleged that the malware hacked the user’s smartphone to inject malware. Malware steals users’ banking details, which cybercriminals use for fraudulent financial transactions.
Singh also advised smartphone users not to click on links from unknown sources on WhatsApp or any other social media platform. There may be situations where a phone user is unaware that their device has been hacked remotely but they are only alarmed when they find out that their bank accounts have been emptied, the additional DCP said.
“Most recently, three people went to the police within 24 hours from a single police station with similar allegations of cyber fraud, so they lost a combined Rs 30 lakh,” the officer said.
